There are a number of things you should consider when deciding on the right pet insurance policy for you. A good starting point is to look at the type pf policy and the level of vet fees covered.
Types of Policy
When comparing various insurance offerings, understanding the different types of policy available can be confusing; below we lay out for you the three generic options available and their relative pros and cons.
1. "12 month" Pet Insurance: vet fees incurred for up to 12 months after diagnosis/incident are covered and you are not able to claim fees for that condition beyond 12 months. These policies are generally cheaper. If you are looking for the Cheapest Pet Insurance option whilst still having essential cover to meet the initial high costs of veterinary treatment (i.e. treatment for a road traffic accident), then this type of policy may be for you. If your pet develops a chronic condition (i.e. a long term illness like diabetes), you will only be able to claim for veterinary treatment for that condition for 12 months. After 12 months that condition will be excluded. This type of cover is offered by our Planet Direct® Pet Insurance “Classic” Policy
2. "Maximum benefit" Pet Insurance: such policies cover each condition no matter how long the ongoing treatment lasts (subject of course to the insurance policy being renewed) but only up to a defined vet fee limit per condition. 3. "Lifetime Cover" Pet Insurance: these policies provide ongoing cover for all veterinary treatment up to an annual limit. If the policy is renewed each year, this type of policy will cover treatment for a condition for the life of the pet. They are sometimes referred to as “Annual Benefit” policies. This type of policy effectively covers what for many pet owners is the greatest fear: a long term condition (a chronic or recurring illness such as arthritis, diabetes or digestive problems) which may lead to vet fees building up over many years to a level that would be capped under the “maximum benefit” types of cover above.
