Cat gives birth in DIY store [21/04/2009]
A stray cat which sneaked into a branch of popular DIY store B&Q has given birth to kittens among the power tools and electric screwdrivers.

The black and white cat, nicknamed the Painted Lady by staff, had got into the store unnoticed and made its home on a shelf where she gave birth to four offspring at around midnight one night.

Staff were only aroused to the presence of the pregnant cat when they heard meowing noises coming from one of the shelves.

Later the kittens were taken to Gables Farm for cats and dogs where they were cared for.

Katie Barkell, spokesperson for the animal care home, said: "The cat got into the store and on to a top shelf. She needed to give birth and found a nice, quiet spot. When they found her she looked distressed and they called the vet - then they realised she'd had kittens."

Summer brings with it an increased number of stray cats having kittens and the Mayhew Animal Home in London recently launched a campaign to raise awareness of the issue.
