Top ten homes for animals named [21/08/2009]
A list has been compiled of the ten best animal homes of all time.

The architect's journal has drawn on sanctuaries and zoos from around the world to produce the list, which looks at the top places for animals to reside.

At five in the list came the Giraffe House at Rotterdam Zoo which sets a sustainable benchmark for animal enclosures. Apparently the welfare of the animals and adhering to a 'Cradle to Cradle' design philosophy were principal factors in designing the building, with most of the materials used in construction being recycled.

At number two was the Snowdon Aviary - built in 1964 the aviary is an intriguing structure. Tony Armstrong-Jones, once married to Princess Margaret carried out the design. It provides a place for the feathered residents to fly unobstructed and allows full exposure to the elements.

But at number one, predictably, was Noah's Ark.

Described by the news provider as: "The ultimate in pet architecture: it housed seven mating pairs of every 'bird, animal and creature that moves along the ground measuring 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high, the Ark was the largest sea going vessel until 1884."
