Just a few months ago, the All Creatures Great and Small Animal Sanctuary was facing a stark choice: cough up £60,000 or close.
As part of a desperate effort to raise the necessary money in time, the sanctuary started a new internet site with their appeal. And it worked. An anonymous donor appeared at the last minute, and everyone was headed for a happy ending.
However, the website has proved itself a valuable tool yet again. The sanctuary has a strict policy of not allowing pets to be given as Christmas presents, and therefore does not do any rehoming during December. Like so many other rescue centres, they fill up quickly with animals looking for homes.
On just one day, the sanctuary received 19 animals. And by New Year, there were three times as many dogs as they could normally handle.
By January 7th - just five days after starting re-homing - the sanctuary returned to normal levels, having rehomed two-thirds of the dogs! This was an incredible achievement, with many of the new owners coming from all over Britain to rehome a dog. When asked how they had come find the sanctuary, they all replied that they had found the web site on the internet!
The All Creatures Great and Small sanctuary would urge any other rescue, no matter how small, to get online - it really pays off.
