Breed Classification		The Field Spaniel is a member of the gundog group. They were originally used for retrieving game; today they are used for rough shooting and as companions for the country dweller. They are also seen in the show ring.

Weight Height Range		Ideally dogs should measure 45.7cms at the withers and weigh between 18 to 25kgs. Bitches should ideally measure 43cms at the withers and weigh between 18-25kgs.
Ailments		There is relatively little known about the ailments of the Field Spaniel. This is mainly due to the fact that they are few in number; therefore little veterinary research has been carried out. Some breed lines, which have Springer Spaniels in their ancestry, may be susceptible to the same ailments as the Springers.

History		A Field Spaniel type of dog was first recorded in the early 19th century. Early litters of these types contained both Field and Cocker spaniels. Once the Field Spaniel was recognised as a separate breed it was selectively bred with disastrous results. It was unable to work as well in the field as it had been. By the end of World War II they were very rare and their championship status was withdrawn. However, breeders managed to restore this breed, for the field and show ring, by introducing Springer Spaniels and English Cockers into the breed lines. This resulted in the Field Spaniel increasing in numbers and championship status was restored in 1969.
Intelligence		This dog is naturally intelligent making it quick to learn. They need consistent training due to their independent and stubborn streaks. As they are quite sensitive they will react to your voice so care must be taken, as harsh words in a strong manner will disturb this dog.
Show Characteristics		The head should appear well defined with slightly raised eyebrows. The muzzle should be long and lean, but not blunt or square, the jaw should be strong with a complete scissor bite. The eyes should be almond shaped, dark brown or hazel in colour with a gentle expression. Their ears should be long, wide, hanging low and well feathered. The neck should be strong, long and muscular. The chest should be deep and the topline level. The front legs should appear straight; the back legs should be strong and muscular. The feet should be round and tight. Their movement should be a long stride with a good driving action from the rear. Customarily docked to one third, the tail should be low set, never carried above the topline and it should have adequate feathering. If undocked the attributes are the same and it should reach to the hocks and be of moderate length in balane with the rest of the dog. The coat should be long, dense, weatherproof, and glossy and feel silky. There should be feathering on the chest, under carriage and the back of the legs. The preferred colours for the show ring are black, liver or roan.

General Character And Temperament		The Field Spaniel is an intelligent and active little dog, which can be a little stubborn. They do get on well with children, and enjoy being indoors as much as being outside. They are ideally suited to the active country dwelling family, although it has been said that they can be a one man’s dog. They can be quite vocal, so they must be taught when to stop. They should be socialised whilst young and training started at an early age.

Grooming		The coat of the Field Spaniel is long, dense and waterproof. Due to the length of the coat, and the amount of feathering they have, they do need a reasonable amount of grooming. The dead hairs can be removed by hand plucking and the hair on the ears, legs and neck should be thinned out, it may be necessary for a professional groomer or the breeder to show you how to do this.
