General Physical Description		The Persian Longhair is a solid cat with a massive head in proportion to its body. The head is round and broad. The ears are small and rounded. They are set wide apart and low on the head blending into the rounded contour of the head. The face is short and broad with a snub nose. The nose leather must be fully formed and the upper edge must not be above the lower edge of the eye. The chin is strong and the muzzle is full. The eyes are large and round with brilliant colour. They are bold and set well apart. The body is of medium size and compact. The chest is broad with massive shoulders and rump. The legs are short, thick and strong with large round paws that have ample tufts. The tail is short and bushy.

Show Characteristics		The Persian Longhair is an extremely popular show cat and represents probably the largest, most competitive breed section at UK shows. They require a lot of preparation for shows which is usually on going throughout the cats show career as it is virtually impossible to produce a Persian in show condition overnight. Regular baths are required especially for the lighter coloured varieties as well as daily brushing and combing. On the day much titivation goes on to present the cat at its best. Prizes may be withheld for incorrect coat colour or pattern, incorrect eye colour, upper edge of nose leather is above the lower edge of the eye as well as any of the faults that apply to all breeds such as skull deformities, entropion, under or overshot jaw, tail kinks etc.

Character & Temperament		The Persian Longhair is the classic chocolate box cat and has a temperament to match. They are calm and affectionate. The white Persian is known for being somewhat vain and taking care of its appearance, whilst the blue-cream is generally considered more outgoing than many. They are gentle and are not as boisterously active as some shorthair breeds. Generally speaking they do not mind living on their own and are quite content to be an only cat. They are ideal for those who want an indoor cat, as they are quite content to sit and look pretty.

Grooming & Upkeep

Colour		The Persian Longhair requires daily grooming to keep its long flowing coat free from mats and knots. The use of talcum powder assists in removing tangles and the coat must be combed and brushed every day. Failure to keep the coat tangle free in extreme cases can lead to the cat having to be clipped all over and the coat allowed to regrow. Attention must also be paid to the eyes and bottom. These areas need to be cleaned daily to avoid staining. Persian’s eyes do tend to run and the corner of the eye and side of the nose will need regular cleaning. The bottom area and underside of the tail is prone to becoming caked with faeces and care needs to be taken to keep this area scrupulously clean to avoid staining and uncomfortable lumps.
