Sooty Rules OK

by Carina Norris

As the kitten season draws to a close, The National Kitten Survey has revealed that the most popular kitten name this year is .... Sooty!

As part of the National Kitten Survey launched at the beginning of the year by Whiskas Kitten, owners were asked to reveal what they had named their new furry additions to the family. And although Sooty came top of the chart, Sweep didn't even make it into the top 20!

Last year's top name, Kitty, came in at a surprisingly low ranking at number 18 while two previously trendy new names, Chloe and Gizmo, also hit rock bottom at 19 and 20.

As the rest of the top 10 names show, traditional cat names are still hot favourites, with Tigger coming in at number two and old favourites such as Smokey and Smudge also featuring high in the list.

This year's survey also revealed that people have a tendency to use popular baby names over pet names when it comes to giving cats their identities, perhaps showing how much pets are ‘part of the family’. Currently fashionable traditional ‘human’ names such as Thomas, Sam, Molly, Daisy, Sophie and Rosie all featured in the kitten top 20 this year.
