Unlike other cat flap products, Pet Porte does not require your animal to wear any collar or bulky accessories that can be disturbing and potentially dangerous. Thanks to patented technology that works with the microchip and its unique identification number that your vet has implanted within your animal, whenever your animal is under the porch of the cat flap, the system will scan the unique identification number and, if that number matches the identification number already programmed in for that animal, it will unlock the cat flap and allow that particular animal to enter. If the animal has not already been programmed into the system, then the cat flap will remain locked and the animal cannot gain access to the premises. If you are not sure whether your animal has a microchip then please ask your vet to scan for it. The Pet Porte cat flap is designed to read the most common type of microchip, the FDX-B; it will not read other types of microchip. Customer Reviews: Not bad - but not good enough for Avid microchips! posted on 26/04/2009 by Noah_and_Bea I have had the PetPorte for just over a week and so far am a little disappointed with it as it doesn't work as well as I had hoped. My cats Noah and Bea had never had a flap before, and they have taken to going out of it which is excellent as it saves me getting up to open the door 20 times a day! The problem comes however when they come to getting back in. My cats both have the Avid microchips which the PetPorte doesn't read well at all. To be fair, it did say on the PetPorte website that the read range of these chips would be reduced, but the PetPorte only reads my cats' chips when their necks are literally one inch below the porch so unfortunately they can't get in unassisted i.e. without me picking them up to get scanned!. I think I might have to take the advice of the customer below who has built a platform that will raise the cats shoulders/necks up so the PetPorte can read their chips, but it is disappointing to have to do this. One good feature however is the night sensor. It is very sensitive so as soon as it starts going slightly dark outside it prevents the cats from going out. I think this is excellent as I don't like Noah and Bea to be out and about in the dark. On the whole I would definately recommend buying a cat flap for those who don't have one at all. However, this particular model is a waste of money if your cats have the Avid microchips as the PetPorte doesn't have a large enough read range to pick up these chips. Great cat flap posted on 16/04/2009 by judi £99.99 for the Pet Porte, £50 for a new door panel the hole in the old one was too big for the Pet Porte, £50 to have my two boys re-chipped their old microchips would not work with the Pet Porte and the joiner's bill still to come. Worth it? Yes, yes, yes! Unlike one or two other reviewers I have not experienced any problems with it so far perhaps because it was beautifully fitted by a professional?. The boys were so inquisitive when they saw me assembling it that they virtually scanned themselves - I didn't need anyone to hold it or them. They started using it immediately after installation with no fuss. I do live in a very, very windy part of the country so there is, I guess, the possibility that on wild days the flap might not close properly behind them - but then few cats want to be out in such conditions and it can simply be locked for a while. The great thing is that the ruffian who has been ruining our lives for the past few months now CAN'T GET IN! Hooray. We can enjoy our home in peace. I no longer have to put on gardening gloves in order to drag him out from under my bed he attacks. A friend, who is in a wheelchair and who was also being plagued by a rogue feline and to whom I gave details of the Pet Porte, is similarly delighted with hers. Once or twice, she says, it has failed to close correctly if one of her cats is rather slow coming through, and then they find themselves locked in.
