When your cat uses the box it will activate optical sensors. The crystal litter immediately starts to absorb moisture, dry out waste and lock in odours. CRYSTAL LITTER DOES NOT CLUMP. A 20 minute countdown cycle begins when your cat leaves the box and a light on top of the unit will blink slowly. If your cat returns to the box the countdown cycle will stop and will re-set after the cat has left again. After the countdown, the rake sweeps through the litter and moves the dried-out solids into the waste trap. The crystals absorb the urine. The rake will then reverse to smooth out and level the litter bed. There is nothing to fill, empty or clean for up to 30 days, (this is based on an average sized healthy cat). The box may require to be changed more frequently if your cat is a kitten, over 10 years of age or overweight. Once the cartridge requires changing it is simply a case of jiggling the litter box to reduce litter that may have accumulated behind the rake. Stand ScoopFree up on its end by lifting the front of the waste lid and slide out the old cartridge. Remove the cartridge cover from under the tray and place over cartridge and dispose. Then all you have to do is install a new cartridge and off you go. Factors such as size, diet and health can also impact the life span of the litter tray. Cats who consume a diet high in crude fibre, ash and by products may experience a shortened litter tray life span. They are fascinated each time it goes into action. I would say that with 2 cats you do need to keep any eye on the build up of "solids" in the concealed compartment and I have had to manually empty this to make room for more. This is not a problem and is easy to do. The relief from emptying heavy clumping litter and the odours associated with it more than compensate for this. I recommend the "Scoopfree" and it seems very good value. I had a "Littermaid" before and in my opinion this is far superior.                     Brilliant idea! posted on 01/06/2010 by linda138 I have had my Scoopfree installed for 2 weeks now and it is excellent. So wonderful not to have to clean a tray of clumps every evening for my 2 cats (one elderly lady, and a young male persian). You can use the same catridge several times, just empty it, refill it with litter crystals, i use fresh'n'easy and it costs a fraction of the price. Excellent also when pet planet runs out. I've only had the product for about 3 weeks and it is have to cope with 2 very old cats, one of them suffering from kidney failure which means a far higher usage of the litter box than is anticipated by the makers. For us this means that £15 for the refill cartridges is a high cost as we need to change them every 3-4 days, not the 20-30 days it says on the box.                     Almost life changing! posted on 23/01/2010 by Boscough Having two cats, one of whom has recently become chronically ill and has to remain indoors, I was tearing my hair out with the continuous cleaning out & up of litter trays and the permanent smell in the house. I decided to try this as a last resort, despite the cost and have to say I am so glad I did. Both took to it straight away. The house smells better and I have more time on my hands from not having to clean and empty trays. Not sure if the two week life span of a cartridge someone else reviewed was for two indoor cats like mine. After nearly a week I think I may have to change it, which will prove costly. But for me, my time and sanity is more important.                     Great product.... Pity about the re-fills posted on 10/08/2009 by dave6550 This is a great product, and solved my problem, until that is, the ONLY UK supplier of the replacement cartridges went out of stock for weeks!!! They've been out of stock for 6 weeks, and estimate another 6 weeks before they have any more the cartridge lasts, at the most 1 month!!. They are the only UK supplier so I am now left with a useless lump of plastic. So unless another UK supplier comes along, I'd recommend against this product as you may well be left without re-fills for months!
