When you first collect your new pet it is a good idea to transport it home in a carrier. Most animals like a place that they will feel secure in, and they will see their carrier as such if they are used from an early age. They will retreat into them if they feel threatened in any way. They can also be used if the animal is recovering from an illness or operation.

Different types of pet carriers. At top right, sturdy plastic carriers suitable for cats or small dogs. Centre, a top opening plastic carrier suitable for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs or other small animal. Upper left, a cheerful cardboard carrier. |
Cats will need to be contained in a carrier when attending the vet or when going to the cattery. Never carry the cat in your arms when travelling. The carriers that can be used are fold-up cardboard, wire cat baskets and plastic carriers. When using cardboard carriers make sure you put lots of paper on the bottom in case of accidents.
Rabbits can be carried in the same carriers as the cats. Make sure the carrier is big enough for your pet to lie down and turn around in. Smaller animals will need smaller carriers with adequate air holes. These carriers are usually shoebox size and made of clear plastic.

Two types of dog crate, which can be used for transporting in a car, or as an indoor kennel.
To the left is a folding metal crate with two access doors.
On the right is a plastic kennel/carrier mounted on wheels for flexible uses. |
Dogs, particularly puppies and small dogs, can be transported in substantial plastic carriers. Another type of carrier used for dogs is the dog crate. These dog crates are made up of wire panels, sides, top and bottom. The bottom panel will have a tray, either in metal or plastic. The wire panels fold down making it into a flat pack and as such easy to carry. These crates are also known as indoor kennels or cages. They are ideal for training puppies and restraining boisterous dogs. You can also use them when you go visiting or on holiday as they are easy to transport.
When you invest in a carrier ensure that it will be big enough for your pet when it is fully grown. The carrier will then last a lifetime. You will be able to transport your pet knowing that it will feel be safe and secure.
