A: Info on Cushings Disease, Please PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Cushings disease is caused by the excess production of steroid hormones by
the adrenal gland, as a result of either a brain (pituitary) tumour, or an
adrenal tumour. In some cases a similar syndrome is seen in animals given
high doses of steroids for prolonged periods of time. Treatment usually involves chemotherapy to reduce the functional adrenal tissue. Surgery may be
indicated in some cases, to remove the adrenal or pituitary, however this is
specialised surgery and is usually only undertaken by referral centres.
Symptoms include, thin skin, pot-bellied appearance, drinking and urinating
excessively, weight gain, alopecia, lethargy.
