	Puss suffering from Post Op Depression Q: Hi Our cat has just been spayed 2 days ago and has become really depressed. She has stopped playing and now looks as though she is unhappy all the time. I think the lampshade (collar) she has been given to wear is possibly irritating her as much as anything. We have been told by the vet that it must be worn for 10 days. Can we remove it before or will there be danger of pulling the stitches out.Is there another method other than a lampshade ?! She was such a happy pussy before the op !

A: Get her checked over by your vet to rule out possible complications after the op. If she is in good health, I'm afraid the collar will have to stay on as long as the sutures are in, to prevent your cat hurting herself by chewing them out. You can take the collar off whilst you are there to supervise, but be warned, they cat be very quick, with the sutures out like lightning and another trip to the vet, anaesthetic and re-suturing becoming necessary. In rare cases cats have taken out ALL the sutures, including the
internal ones, with horrific consequences. 10 days in the life of the cat is not really as long as it seems, and the time will fly past. Sarah Mark MRCVS (Vet for PetPlanet)
