Q: Labrador with Rash on her Tummy PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk My dog is a black labrador called Poppy. She has a rash on her stomach. We are not sure what it is. She can come out with the rash sometimes and other times it goes away. Please can you help. Thank you. Tony

A:Labrador with Rash on her Tummy PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk Dear Tony, There are many different things that can cause a rash on a dogs stomach and without seeing Poppy's it is very difficult to say what is causing hers. The skin on the abdomen area is quite sensitive in dogs, as there is less hair on it to protect it. You did not sat what age she is - many young dogs get a spotty rash on their stomach which is caused by a bacterial infection - it is called Pyoderma and looks like little red pimples. The need a course of antibiotics to clear it up. Irritation can also cause a rash in this area - such as if she is running through long wet grass or undergrowth. It can also be a hypersensitivity or allergy to something she is lying on, such as a particular rug or carpet in the house, or the washing powder her blanket is washed in. Whenever she meets whatever it is she is allergic too, she will develop a rash on this bald area. She really needs to be seen by a vet who may be able to tell you more by examining her and advise what the best treatment is for Poppy.
Good luck,
