Incontinent GSD
Q: Incontinent GSD PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear PetPlanet Vets,
We have a four year old, spayed, German Shepherd bitch, who has recently
started urinating while she is lying down. This has happened when we are there, and also when she is on her own. It doesn't seem to distress her, and to be honest I don't think she knows she's doing it until it's too late - also, the urine hardly smells at all, and is more like regular water. Is she
incontinent, or could these symptoms be an indication of a more serious problem ? Other than this she is in fine shape, gets plenty of exercise, and is happy. Thanks for reading !
Anthony.

Dear Anthony,
This does sound like incontinence, and you should get her checked over by a vet to establish the cause. The most likely is an acquired urethral incompetence due to her being spayed, but it would be as well to rule out infection or other possible causes. Try and get a clean urine sample to take along with you so the vet can test it
and be prepared for them to ask for x-rays to be done. If it is due to her being spayed, there are treatments available to increase the sphincter tone and return control. Hormones such as stilboestol or
diethylstilboestrol or alpha adrenergic agonists such as phenylpropanolamine
or pseudoephedrine are commonly used.
So, first step is get along to your vet.
