A: Common Signs of a Phantom Pregnancy PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear Don and Jen, In the dog, the main signs are seen around six to nine weeks after oestrus, ie the time the bitch would give birth, had she been mated successfully. Any or all of the following signs are seen: enlargement of the mammary glands, with or without milk production; inappetance;lethargy;"nest building" behaviour; gathering toys/objects into the nest and attempting to feed them. It usually becomes obvious that the bitch isn't pregnant and is suffering from false pregnancy, however in some cases, where there is a possibility of mating having occurred, care must be taken before treating the bitch to ensure she isn't actually pregnant. Hope this is useful, Sarah Mark BA VetMB MRCVS (Vet for PetPlanet)
