Bitch who is faecally incontinent

Q: Bitch who is faecally incontinent PetPlanet Talk Adminstrator PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk Hello and help. My 6 year old bitch has been faecally incontinent for the pass 4 days, i am taking her to see my vet this afternoon but would be very interested to know what you think? She seems quite well apart from that, she is also unaware that she is doing it. The faeces she passes is in small solid lumps.Thank you in anticipation.

A:Bitch who is faecally incontinent PetPlanet Talk Adminstrator PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk It is difficult to guess what may be going on without more information & especially a physical examination in a case like this, but if she is truly unaware that she is defaecating, then there may be problems with the nerves around her anus and rectum. Your vet will probably need to perform a rectal examination, to ensure that she has not got an accumulation of faeces in her rectum - this would require an enema to clear. Nerve problems are sometimes difficult to localise, as they can originate in the spinal cord, or in the local area affected. Steve Mullender MRCVS vet for petplanet
